Why did you become a professor?
Always wanted to teach. When I started consulting in 2001, I saw that I had flexibility
in my schedule and decided it was now or never. Took a couple of years to find a
job, but once I started I knew it was what I wanted to do.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
I love the interaction with students, especially one-on-one. I enjoy seeing the students
grasp a complex topic and the "light goes on". Lot's of opportunities in Audit for
that light to turn on. Seeing a student pass the exam.
What do you hope students gain from your courses?
A true appreciation for business and that accounting is one of the many disciplines
needed and involved in a successful business. How to be a leader, not backing away
from tough decisions, and always seek a solution. Also an understanding that the
CPA exam is passable only if you put forth the effort and respect the exam and the
profession.
What did you do prior to entering academia?
I worked in public accounting for 3 years with Touche Ross in NYC and in Dallas. Worked
15 years at Hines Interests, a developer and manager of commercial RE, 3 years with
Ross Perot Jr at Hillwood (Alliance Airport), 3 years with Coopers & Stebbins a niche
commercial developer (Southlake Town Square), then 12 years as a consultant primarily
in RE. Started teaching during this time and in 2013 I joined UD as a full time staff,
the following year I became an Affiliate.
What are you passionate about outside of the University?
God and my faith, family (wife, children, grandkids, siblings), and friends. I teach
Bible study at church and teach faith formation for adults. I enjoy music, used to
play sax/clarinet, and I listen to 1950's jazz (small groups - John Coltrane Miles
Davis, Charlie Parker), big bands, rock (late 1960s and 1970s, Beatles, Rolling Stones,
Allman Brothers). Reading mostly spiritual. Enjoy World Cup Soccer, and Tour de
France, and Olympics.
